Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from PT I’ve had before?

Treatments are one-on-one with your Doctor of Physical Therapy for an entire hour. You will see the same therapist from the first session to the last and will never have to split your time with another patient.

Because of this model, you will make progress quicker than at an in-patient clinic. No more PT 2-3x per week for 6-12 weeks. Performance physical therapy, like what you will receive at ALTR, will get you out of pain sooner and reach/exceed your goals before you know it.

Our goal is to treat the source of your pain, not the symptoms. This will be done through hands-on treatment, specific exercises, and activities tailored towards your personal goals. With fewer passive treatments (ice, heat, etc.), you will make progress faster.

Once you are out of pain, our goal is to prevent it from coming back. This is where the whole body comes into play. We will discuss elements of your health that can affect everything (sleep, nutrition, stress, physical activity, etc.). Healthy living and injury prevention go hand-in-hand. We want to show you how.

Do I need a prescription or a referral from my doctor?

A prescription or referral for physical therapy is not required! Since we are not filing through your insurance, you are able to schedule right now without any hassle.

If you plan to seek reimbursement for your appointments at ALTR Performance & Physical Therapy, then South Carolina’s healthcare law permits 30 days of “Direct Access” to physical therapy before a physician must sign off on your plan of care. “Direct Access” refers to your ability to walk into ALTR Performance & Physical Therapy without a doctor’s referral. This means we can get started, but if the plan goes longer than 30 days, we will need to reach out to your doctor.

Typically, ALTR is able to get you an appointment sooner than in-network clinics. So, for acute injuries, we can often address these issues before Direct Access regulations come into play.

Do you take my insurance?

ALTR Performance & Physical Therapy, LLC is an out-of-network provider, operating through a fee-for-service model. Payments are accepted in full at the time of service via cash, check, debit/credit card, or HSA/FSA.

We are proud to partner with Reimbursify for those wishing to submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement. Through Reimbursify, you will be able to check your out of network benefits, submit claims for reimbursement, and/or see claims that we have submitted on your behalf. Create your account here and check your benefits!

Being out-of-network allows us to have one-on-one, 60-minute sessions with our clients. This model of physical therapy care results in quicker recovery from injury, fewer visits than in-patient models, and improved cost-effectiveness, especially for those with a high-deductible insurance plan. Out-of-network, fee-for-service is the most transparent your healthcare can be. No surprise bills months later when your insurance decides to deny some of your claims. You pay up front and we get to work without the bureaucracy of health insurance. It really is that simple.

What should I expect during my Initial Evaluation?

After you book your appointment, you will receive an email with links to your patient portal, where you will complete your intake forms. These intake forms are important for your Doctor of Physical Therapy to gain an understanding of your pain and goals.

Your initial evaluation will be 60 minutes. We will complete a detailed medical history, review current and past injuries, then complete a functional movement and strength assessment in order to determine the movements that cause your pain or, in some cases, make it better. Often following the assessment will be hands-on treatment to help alleviate your pain.

You will leave your evaluation with the knowledge of what is causing your pain/dysfunction and the plan to address it.

What should I wear?
Whatever you typically wear to work out! This is physical therapy unlike any other you have experienced before. Athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes (preferably tennis shoes) are best. If you are seeking help for a lower extremity issue (hip, knee, leg, ankle/foot), then please wear/bring shorts.
